Rep. Gowdy just weighted in on the alleged President Trump dossier, which was originally picked up by BuzzFeed, and pushed Democrats into corner, saying that they are “fearful” that the dossier is a “piece of fiction.” The dossier allegedly blamed President Trump for colluding with the Russian government, and it was the base upon which later was launched an investigation into the president.
Via USA Newsflash:
He is proposing this theory for why Democrats are pushing back so hard against a GOP effort to get tons of answers about the Russian dossier story from the FBI and DOJ.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Caller, the House Intelligence Committee member addressed claims from Dems and some media outlets that he and the GOP are attempting to discredit the dossier and its author, former British spy Christopher Steele, and finally put an end to this narrative.
“I don’t know why anyone — from [California Rep.] Adam Schiff, to Vanity Fair, to Rachel Maddow — would not be curious whether or not the world’s premier law enforcement agency relied upon a dossier in connection with an investigation without vetting it,” Trey Gowdy stated.
Gowdy continued, “For the life of me I don’t understand why they are focused on this, unless they are fearful that the bureau did rely on a piece of fiction.”
Committee Republicans issued a subpoena for AG Jeff Sessions and Wray August 24, demanding information about how central the dossier is to the collusion investigation and how it was vetted.
No documents were provided in response to the subpoena, so the committee extended the deadline until September 14. They are also planing meetings with Sessions and Wray to give them an explanation why information about the dossier should be withheld from Congress.
Dems have alleged that the Republicans are taking a unilateral and unnecessary step to discredit the dossier.
Trey Gowdy’s response to their complaints is: “I really don’t know what in the hell they’re talking about.”
Gowdy went on to say:
“The investigators on [the Intelligence Committee] have been trying for months to obtain documents about the dossier, but when you get no response, then you go from a polite request, to a firm request to a legal request.”
“And if they still don’t comply with it, then we’re well within our rights — I’ve done it before — you bring in a witness and say ‘OK, you’re under oath, you need to explain to me why you don’t think you need to share this, what am I missing?’”
The dossier, as has by now been widely reported, came into being last June, after Steele, a former MI6 agent based in London, was hired by an opposition research firm called Fusion GPS to investigate Trump’s activities in Russia. Fusion, which was co-founded by former Wall Street Journal reporters, was working at the time for an unidentified ally of Hillary Clinton’s.
One can clearly see the connection here, and if there is any collusion out there, it’s between the media and the left and all their spies, trying to sabotage President Trump or to make a living hell out of his presidency.
